Amalfi Coast Travel Diary

Welcome to the last Italy chapter. I am sad. I was living this experience all over again.

Before I tell you my experience, I would like to say that 4 days is perfect to see it all, but if you want to see it all + relax, I'd recommend a week. The Amalfi Coast starts in Salerno and ends in Sorrento, the best place to stay (geographically speaking) is Amalfi, it's right in the middle and you have plenty of buses to both sides. Now, in my humble opinion, I would choose any town from Amalfi to Salerno to sleep, it doesn't have crazy crowds and you don't have to wait to get into buses. I went in October, so I can't even imagine how crowded it must be in july or august. So this information may vary according to the time of the year you choose to go.

The bus system is incredible, don't rent a car, the driveway is insane, it's extremely tight but people drive extremely fast, so if you are not familiar with the road, I wouldn't recommend. Another negative point would be parking. So, if you don't want to take the bus, a motorcycle (yes Vespa, I'm talking about you) is the perfect vehicle. You have the freedom to choose when and where you can stop.

Now, I didn't go to all the places I will tell you, because I didn't have the time, but the perfect itinerary for me would be:
Day 1 - Salerno, Vietri Sul Mare, Cetara;
Day 2 - Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Ravello;
Day 3 - Amalfi, Furore di Fiordo, Praiano;
Day 4 - Positano, Sorrento;
Day 5 - Capri;
Extra day - Path of the Gods (if you like hiking).

This itinerary gives you time to enjoy the view, the sun and relax at the beach (water temperature is about 22ºC).

In just two days, I managed to go to Maiori, Minori, Atrani, Ravello, Amalfi, Furore, Praiano and Positano. Of course it was extremely fast paced, but I knew it would be.

We got in a bus in Roma directed to Naples (which was my mistake because the last stop of this bus was Salerno) and spent the night there.

Early in the morning we got ourselves in another bus to Maiori, which was the place we were going to stay. Our check in was at 2pm so we just left the bags and went straight into town of Maiori, we had time, so we just chose a random street and started our exploring. Maiori was one of my favorites, I'm not a big fan of crowded places so this was just perfect. We had lunch by the beach, we just bought a panini with prosciutto and mozzarela. Our check in was late so the hotel offered us a welcome drink, I didn't mind this because the bar had a view I could wake up to every single day.

And that's why we didn't go to Minori next, I knew I had to go to Ravello in this day, otherwise we wouldn't be able to go, so we got in a bus and stopped at Atrani (we later came back to have dinner, it was amazing, we had the spaghetti with clams). In Atrani we got in another bus to Ravello.

My favorite place was Ravello, without a doubt, it's not alongside the coast, it's up so you have beautiful views and the villas are just amazing. Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo both have gardens, you have to pay, so research the one you would like to go, or just go to both, entrance is 7€.

On day 2 we went to Amalfi, I don't really have much to say, it's all insanely picturesque, I really
loved it. You can see it's more crowded, but it's expected.

Fiordo di Furore is a place you go for relax, you can see what I'm talking about in the pictures.

What I really wanted to talk about was Positano. I understand why people love it, I really do. It's huge! And it's happening so much all the time, I usually love that feeling, but now imagine your vacation spot is a beach, and now imagine that beach crowded, now imagine you pay 8€ for a sandwich with yesterday's bread. In Positano, every single thing you pay is because of its status. I don't know, it was kind of disappointing in that way, but besides that it had all the beautiful things the Amalfi Coast promises to give you. Maybe I was just sad because it was my last and it was raining.
