You probably don’t know this, but besides loving to travel, I also love football/soccer (I cheer for Sporting Clube de Portugal). And sometimes, there's an opportunity to gather these two things: in December, I travelled with two friends to Barcelona to watch a match between FC Barcelona and Sporting CP.
I already knew Barcelona well, but the Spanish capital was yet to be visited. And since a friend of ours was studying in Madrid, we decided to pay her a visit before we returned to Lisbon.
Madrid undoubtedly has its charm. The wide and clean streets, the well-dressed people, the numerous monuments in each corner, the many parks in the middle of the city, the churros with hot chocolate during the afternoon...
We were there for 3 days and among all the tourist attractions we visited, I want to highlight 5 that in my opinion, shouldn’t be missed! Here’s the list (not in a specific order):
Royal Palace of Madrid
Built on the site of the old Alcazar fortress, it’s the largest building in the city and the largest royal palace in Western Europe. The first king to live in this palace was Carlos III, having since become the official residence for royalty (although the current royal family doesn’t live here).

Plaza Mayor
It is considered to be the main square of Madrid, not only for its size but also for historical reasons: it served as a place of execution, inquisition judgments, markets, bullrings, and coronation days. It was designed by Juan Herrera in the 1560s, and built during the reign of Filipe II.
Retiro park
Popularly known as El Retiro, it's one of the city's most visited attractions, not only by tourists but also by a lot of locals. Within the park, it is possible to see several sculptures, fountains and buildings from the 17th-21st centuries, of which I highlight the Palacio de Cristal, Palacio Velasquez, and Casa de Vacas (with art exhibitions inside).

Almudena Cathedral
Located right next to the Royal Palace, this cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid. You can see a neoclassical style in its exterior, and inside, a neogothic style with a bright and colorful ceiling. It is an emblematic place of worship and it was the first cathedral to be consecrated outside of Rome by Pope John Paul II.

Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande
This basilica was built by Carlos III on the site of a former convent which, according to a legend, was founded by St. Francis of Assisi in the 13th century. This church dates back to 1760, being known not only for the Zurburán and Goya frescoes, but also for its dome (which has the third largest diameter of Christianity).

Admission: General ticket - 3€. Reduced rate - 2€.
Opening hours: From Sep 1st to Jun 30th: Tue-Sat from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. / From Jul 1st to Aug 31st: Tue-Sun from 10:30 a.m-12:30p.m. and from 5p.m.-7p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Ainda não devem saber disto, mas para além de fã de viagens, sou também fã de futebol (torço pelo Sporting Clube de Portugal). Por vezes, surge a oportunidade de juntar essas duas coisas: em Dezembro, fui com duas amigas a Barcelona ver o FC Barcelona vs. Sporting CP.
Já conhecia bem Barcelona, mas a capital espanhola ainda estava por visitar. E como uma amiga nossa estava a estudar em Madrid, decidimos visitá-la antes de voltarmos para Lisboa.
Madrid tem sem dúvida o seu encanto. As ruas largas e limpas, as pessoas sempre bem vestidas, os vários monumentos em cada esquina, os diversos parques no meio da cidade, os churros com chocolate quente durante a tarde...
Estivemos lá durante 3 dias e entre as diversas atracções que visitámos, quero destacar 5 que na minha opinião não devem perder! Segue-se a lista (por ordem aleatória):
Palácio Real de Madrid
É o maior edifício da cidade e o maior palácio real da Europa ocidental, construído no local da antiga fortaleza Alcazar. O primeiro rei a viver neste palácio foi Carlos III, tendo-se tornado desde então a residência oficial da realeza (embora a actual família real não viva lá).

Cidadãos entre os 5 e 16 anos/ Estudantes abaixo dos 25 anos – 5€;
Menos de 5 anos de idade – Gratuito;

Plaza Mayor
É considerada a principal praça de Madrid, não só pela sua dimensão como por razões históricas: serviu como local de execução, de julgamentos da Inquisição, de mercados, de touradas, e de coroação. Foi projectada por Juan Herrera na década de 1560, e construída durante o reinado de Felipe II.
Parque del Retiro
Popularmente conhecido como El Retiro, é uma das atracções da cidade mais visitada por turistas e locais. Dentro do parque, é possível ver diversas esculturas, fontes, e edifícios dos séculos XVII–XXI, dos quais destaco o Palácio de Cristal, o Palácio Velasquez e a Casa de Vacas (com exposições de arte).Localização: Plaza de la Indepencia, 7

Catedral Almudena
Esta catedral fica ao lado do Palácio Real, e é a sede episcopal da diocese de Madrid. No seu exterior, um estilo neoclássico, no seu interior, um estilo neogótico com um tecto colorido e brilhante. Trata-se de um local emblemático de culto, tendo sido a primeira catedral a ser consagrada pelo papa João Paulo II fora de Roma.

Real Basilica de San Francisco el Grande
Mandada construir por Carlos III no local de um antigo convento que, segundo a lenda, foi fundado por São Francisco de Assis no século XIII. Esta igreja data de 1760, sendo conhecida não só pelos frescos de Zurburán e Goya, como pela sua cúpula (que tem o terceiro maior diâmetro do cristianismo).

Preçário: Bilhete geral – 3€. Tarifa reduzida – 2€.
Horário: De 1 Set a 30 Jun: Ter-Sáb da 10:30h-12:30h e das 16h-18h / De 1 Jul a 31 Ago: Ter-Dom das 10:30-12:30h e das 17-19h. Encerra às Segundas.
