8 reasons why I chose Belgium for my Erasmus (Erasmus Series)

    Before anything else, the most important thing about going to Erasmus is definitely choosing the country, so it only makes sense that this is the first post in the Erasmus Series.
    For me it was a pretty easy choice as you will understand whilst reading this post so I hope this can help you in some way.

1) Word of mouth

    One thing you should know about me is that I have a very good memory, I am the person in the group that looks like I’m making up stories because I remember details of things that happen a few years ago. I even have this game with Patrícia (my beautiful partner in this blog - and life in general) that I tell her a story and she has to say if I made it up or if she thinks it happened (her memory is terrible). With that being said, in the first year of my degree we had these students talking about their previous experiences in Erasmus and the girl who came to Belgium spoke about it the way I speak about everything I love and every single word she said was very appealing to me, so from that moment on I obsessed with coming here for my Erasmus. So, I think if you are interested in a place and your university doesn’t have this presentations you should definitely try to speak with someone from your degree and try to find out how their experience was.

2) Weather

    What do you mean weather? Isn’t the weather in Belgium bad? OH MY GOD, it is insane. And most of you will think I am insane as well, but I lived in Lisbon, Portugal my whole life and it’s sunny every god damn day, which is very beautiful, don’t get me wrong but I wanted to come to a place where it would be possible to snow and have a real winter. And guess what? It did snow, so much! Leuven and Brussels in the snow are just magical, I’m just sad I didn’t get to experience the Christmas markets.

    One of the reasons I wanted to come in the second semester is because you get the winter, spring and summer. So I am very excited about experiencing a completely different weather that what I am used to get.

3) To travel

    PEOPLE, do you even understand how easy it is to get to any place in Europe? It’s insane, you have low cost flights, you have buses, you have trains and it’s surrounded by 4 other countries which is something that I don’t have in Portugal, I only have our dear Spanish neighbors. I swear it’s amazing, I go somewhere every weekend and it’s very cheap, as you will understand in future posts.

    And we are not just talking about international travel here, Belgium is insanely beautiful and I am really looking forward to show this to you and continue exploring this country.

4) Food

    Of course the mussels are insanely good, the waffles are to die for but what really has my heart is the amazing Belgian chocolate, I’m all about those >70% cocoa and pralines with Speculoos (Belgian cinnamon cookie that goes along perfectly with coffee) inside.
    Fun fact: Did you know that are 2 types of waffles? The Brussels Waffle (the one you are probably used to see) and the Liége Waffle, I made a friend from Liége so I really have to take a preference here and go with the last one because she was very fond of this subject, and with Belgian chocolate inside… yes, you have to visit Belgium.

5) Language

    This wasn’t about speaking french nor dutch, I won’t even mention german but I knew I didn’t want to go to Spain nor Italy because I didn’t want to speak spanish or italian. I love both languages, don’t get me wrong but I needed to make sure my internship would be in English because I wanted to get better at speaking English because I feel that’s what I’m missing. You won’t have a problem in Brussels because everyone speaks English there. In my internship it’s weird they all speak french because it’s unusual (that’s what they told me), so I’m even managing to learn a few things in french as well which is something that I’m enjoying very much because one of my lifetime dreams is to speak at least 5 languages. Why? Because I like even numbers and multiples of five. That’s why. And learning is the best thing in the world. Besides traveling.

6) Money

    No, Belgium isn’t cheap. Brussels is expensive. I’m from Lisbon, everything is expensive in Europe! But comparing to northern countries and keeping in mind the previous topic this was the best option. Going to the supermarket isn’t that bad comparing to Portugal but going out to eat is just insane. I would go bankrupt in 2 weeks.

7) Bicycles

    This was very important to me, I wanted to make sure that I would end up in a country that was bicycle-friendly. I always wanted to get around by bike, experience a culture where it’s usual to go to work by bike even if you can afford the best car in the world.

8) University city

    As I mentioned before I am in Leuven and Leuven is a university city and I wanted to experience that, that's why I am living here instead of Brussels. I love the vibe the city has, it has everything you need, even though it isn't that big. The houses are beautiful, the city is just wonderful. And of course, it's a very bicycle-friendly city.

EXTRA:

    Did you know that Belgium has more castles per square mile than any other country? Oh yes. That's my favorite curiosity right there.
    Of course this didn't count as a main reason for my choice, but I mean... Who doesn't like a few fairy tale castles?


    With all these aspects in mind I chose Belgium, the only other option that I consider for a mild second was The Netherlands because it's very similar but nothing can be compared to the geography of Belgium, in my humble opinion.

    I hope you find this post helpful and even if you don't want to come to Belgium I think there are a few good points that can help you make a decision.

    Antes de todo o processo de candidatura Erasmus tem de se fazer aquilo que considero o mais importante: escolher o sítio para onde se quer ir, portanto faz sentido este ser o primeiro post sobre o tema.

    Confesso que para mim não foi uma tarefa muito difícil como vão poder perceber ao ler o que se segue. Espero que isto ajude alguém que não está tão decidido como eu estava.

1) Experiências anteriores

    Uma coisa importante que devem saber sobre mim é que eu tenho uma memória e pêras! Eu sou aquela pessoa que parece que está sempre a inventar histórias porque mais ninguém se lembra de coisas que aconteceram há algum tempo com os detalhes que eu me lembro. Eu e Patrícia (a minha parceira de aventuras aqui do blog - e da vida em geral) até jogamos um jogo em que eu lhe conto uma história e ela tem de adivinhar se aconteceu ou se eu inventei (a memória dela é muito má, é por isso que isto resulta).

    Agora que já sabem isto sobre mim... No meu primeiro ano de universidade houve uma espécie de palestra em que alunos que fizeram Erasmus foram falar das suas experiências, e a forma como a rapariga que foi para a Bélgica falou deixou-me automaticamente interessada no país. Por isso, se as vossas universidades oferecerem este tipo de palestra, acho mesmo que deviam aproveitar para perceberem se é mesmo aquilo que querem ou se afinal até querem é ir para outro sítio. Nada como experiências em primeira mão. 

2) Meteorologia

    Como assim meteorologia? A Bélgica não tem um tempo péssimo? Opa, se tem, é de loucos. Mas eu vivi em Lisboa a minha vida toda e vamos ser honestos, é um clima muito apelativo, está sol muitas vezes, não chove assim tanto mas precisava de um bocadinho de atitude. Atitude tipo ter todas as estações do ano a sério, um inverno com neve, uma primavera com dias de sol e chuva e um verão em que não morra assada. Mas principalmente NEVE! Andei mesmo criança feliz a brincar na neve, Leuven e Bruxelas estavam lindas lindas lindas. Nada como uma cidade com neve. Só tenho pena de não ter apanhado nenhum mercado de natal.

    A vantagem de vir no 2º Semestre é mesmo a de poder experienciar inverno, primavera e verão.

    E pronto, muito entusiasmada para estas vivências todas.

3) Viajar

    Pessoal, têm a noção de como é fácil chegar a qualquer lado na Europa a partir da Bélgica? Têm voos low cost, autocarros, comboios. E toda a vantagem de já estarem rodeados de outros 4 países que é coisa que não tenho em Portugal (nada contra Espanha, grande fã). 

    É mesmo fácil chegar a qualquer lado, vou a um sítio novo todos os fins-de-semana como vão poder perceber e sai-me muito barato.

    E não estou só a falar de viagens internacionais, a Bélgica é linda de morrer, muito ansiosa por partilhar convosco todas as cidades belgas que tive oportunidade de visitar.

4) Gastronomia

    Claro que os mexilhões são super bons, os waffles são de ficar com água na boca mas o meu coração pertence ao chocolate belga, sou totalmente a favor de >70% cacau e de pralines com Speculoos (que é a bolacha belga de canela que eles têm o hábito de servir com café).

    Curiosidade: Sabiam que há 2 tipos de waffles? O waffle de Bruxelas (aquele que devem estar mais acostumados a ver) e o de Liége. Conheci uma rapariga de Liége e portanto tenho aqui de assumir esta posição: os de Liége são melhores! E podem encontrar waffles com chocolate belga lá dentro. Não sei do que estão à espera para visitar a Bélgica...

5) Língua

    Não estou certamente a falar de francês, holandês nem alemão mas eu sabia que não podia de todo ir para Espanha ou Itália porque não eram as línguas que eu queria desenvolver. Eu queria ter a certeza que o meu estágio ia ser em inglês porque sempre quis praticar as minhas speaking skills, porque é uma coisa que não tenho a oportunidade de fazer em Portugal. Para além de que em Bruxelas toda a gente fala em inglês. No meu estágio eles até costumam dizer que é fora do normal a equipa saber toda falar francês porque não é algo que aconteça com muita frequência numa empresa em Bruxelas. Isto é bom para mim porque posso sempre ir aprendendo umas coisitas em francês, o que é perfeito para o meu sonho de vida de saber falar 5 línguas. Porquê 5? Opa, porque gosto de números pares e múltiplos de 5. E porque aprender coisas novas é quase tão bom como viajar.

6) Dinheiro

    Não, a Bélgica não é barata. Bruxelas é caríssima. Sou de Lisboa, a Europa em geral é caríssima para nós!

    Mas se formos comparar com os países nórdicos e o ponto anterior, esta acaba por ser a melhor opção. Ir ao supermercado não é assim tão diferente de Portugal, é uma questão de saber que supermercado escolher. Agora, ir comer fora é de doidos, tinha ido à falência em 2 semanas de certeza.

7) Bicicletas

    Este era um fator muito importante para mim, eu queria ter a certeza que ia para um país que fosse muito amigo das bicicletas. Sempre quis ter a experiência de andar de bicicleta para todo o lado, que as pessoas andassem de bicicleta de fato, não porque não podem ter um carro mas sim porque a cidade o permite.

8) Cidade universitária

    Como já tinha referido, eu estou a viver em Leuven. Leuven é uma cidade universitária e eu queria garantir que vinha para uma cidade assim. É por isso que estou aqui a viver em vez de Bruxelas. Adoro a vibe que a cidade tem, é uma cidade a sério, tem tudo o que uma pessoa pode precisar e não é muito grande. As casas são lindas, a cidade é linda. E claro, muito boa para andar de bicicleta.

EXTRA:

    Sabiam que a Bélgica tem mais castelos por metro quadrado que qualquer outro país? Ah pois é. Aqui está a minha curiosidade preferida.

    Óbvio que não foi um fator decisivo mas quem é que não gosta de estar rodeado de castelos?
